Sporting CP Secure Australian Sensation Nestory Irankunda on Deal Worth Up to €18 Million

Sporting CP have officially completed the signing of Australian forward Nestory Irankunda from Watford, securing one of the most exciting young attacking talents in the game. The 20-year-old has agreed to a long-term contract that runs until 2031, with Sporting reportedly paying an initial €15 million and potentially another €3 million in performance-related bonuses.
Irankunda arrives in Lisbon after an impressive 2026 campaign that included a memorable World Cup appearance with Australia. He featured in four matches and scored once for the Socceroos, gaining valuable experience on the international stage. At club level, he made 42 appearances for Watford in the Championship last season, contributing four goals and four assists while demonstrating his pace and versatility in the attacking third.

The move to Sporting represents an important step in Irankunda’s development, particularly with the opportunity to compete at the highest level in European football. A reported €80 million release clause has been included in his contract, highlighting the club’s belief in his long-term potential. The prospect of playing in the Champions League is also a major attraction for the young forward, who sees the competition as a dream opportunity.

Known for his explosive speed, strength and ability to operate in several attacking positions, Irankunda offers Sporting considerable tactical flexibility. He can play across the frontline and has the ability to create chances as well as finish them. His arrival also brings plenty of personality, with his love of Michael Jackson influencing both his goal celebrations and parts of his introduction to Sporting supporters.

Irankunda now hopes to make 2026 the beginning of the most successful period of his career. After enjoying a breakthrough year with Australia and earning a major move to Portugal, he is determined to establish himself at Sporting and help the club compete for major honours. With a long-term contract, a substantial release clause and the chance to experience Champions League football, the move could become a defining chapter in the Australian forward’s career.
