Arne Engels Makes Championship History as West Ham Target Immediate Premier League Return
West Ham United have completed the signing of Arne Engels from Celtic, with the Belgian midfielder becoming the most expensive player ever signed by a Championship club. The deal could reportedly reach £25 million if all performance-related bonuses are met, surpassing the previous record of £20.8 million paid by Burnley for Florentino Luis. Engels has signed a five-year contract and arrives with the clear objective of helping West Ham return to the Premier League at the first opportunity.

The 22-year-old will not be available for West Ham’s opening Championship fixture against Burnley on Sunday because his registration was not completed in time. He is expected to make his debut when the Hammers host Charlton in their second league match. His arrival is seen as an important addition to a midfield that will face a demanding campaign after West Ham’s long stay in the Premier League came to an end.

Engels brings valuable experience despite his young age. During his two seasons with Celtic, he helped the Scottish giants win two Scottish Premiership titles and established himself as an important midfielder. He has also earned four senior appearances for Belgium, giving West Ham another player with experience at both domestic and international level.
The Belgian becomes West Ham’s fourth signing of the summer following Keiber Lamadrid, Joel Veltman and Manor Solomon. The club had been working on a deal for Engels since July, with negotiations taking several weeks before accelerating after the midfielder travelled to London for his medical on Friday. His signing underlines West Ham’s determination to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion rather than simply adapting to life in the Championship.

West Ham recruitment chief Nils Koppen views Engels as a long-term investment, with the midfielder considered a key target well before the transfer was completed. His age, consistency and experience at Celtic made him an attractive option, while his motivation to take on the challenge at West Ham further strengthened the club’s interest. With a record-breaking transfer fee and a major role expected in midfield, Engels now faces the task of helping the Hammers turn their promotion ambitions into reality.
