Ronaldo Handed 30-Day Suspension by Portuguese FA Following Dispute Over National Team Role

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following a disciplinary incident involving the national team. The decision was announced by the federation’s disciplinary board on October 19, 2026, after the 41-year-old Al Nassr forward was found guilty of leaving Portugal’s training camp without authorization. The incident reportedly stemmed from a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over Ronaldo’s role and expected playing time within the squad.
The controversy began when Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of their UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark. His decision followed the previous match against Norway, in which he remained an unused substitute. Ronaldo reportedly believed that Jesus had failed to honor promises regarding his playing time on two occasions, prompting frustration that ultimately led to his departure from the camp. The situation subsequently triggered a formal disciplinary investigation by the FPF.
Following its investigation, the federation’s Disciplinary Board ruled that Ronaldo had committed a deliberate breach of Article 160(1) of the FPF Disciplinary Regulations. The proceedings were officially opened on October 9 to examine the incident, which had taken place two days earlier. Under the applicable regulations, players who leave national team duty without authorization can face suspensions ranging from one to six months, making the final punishment considerably shorter than the maximum possible sanction.
Several mitigating factors reportedly influenced the federation’s decision to impose a 30-day suspension rather than a longer ban. These included Ronaldo’s significant contributions to Portuguese football, his outstanding achievements throughout his career, and his public apology issued on October 6, 2026. The forward had acknowledged his behavior following the match against Norway and expressed regret to both supporters and his teammates, helping demonstrate his willingness to address the situation and move forward.
Despite the disciplinary action, Ronaldo has reiterated his commitment to the Portuguese national team and his intention to return once his suspension has been served. FPF president Pedro Proença has also expressed the federation’s desire to welcome the veteran forward back into the squad after the matter has been fully resolved. While the incident has temporarily disrupted Ronaldo’s international duties, both the player and the federation appear focused on putting the dispute behind them and restoring their working relationship.
