Cristian Romero Completes Atletico Madrid Move and Sets His Sights on a Long-Term Future

Cristian Romero has officially completed his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid, becoming the club’s fourth signing of the summer. The Argentina international finalized the move on Saturday after the two clubs reached an agreement earlier in the week. Romero has signed a contract running until 2031 and is already eager to begin his new chapter under Diego Simeone.
The 28-year-old defender arrived in Madrid on Friday, where he underwent his medical before putting pen to paper on his long-term deal. He then joined his new teammates for his first training session the following day. Romero could potentially make his Atletico debut when the team begins the 2026-27 campaign against Malaga on Wednesday.
Romero had attracted interest from several major European clubs before his move to Madrid, including Inter Milan, Barcelona and Arsenal. Atletico’s pursuit, however, was driven by Simeone’s long-standing admiration for the defender. The Spanish club had attempted to sign him a year earlier, but Tottenham’s €80 million valuation prevented a deal at the time. Spurs instead extended Romero’s contract until 2029 and made him club captain.
His departure from Tottenham followed a turbulent season in which the defender was increasingly critical of the club’s management. Romero leaves England with a strong reputation, having made 58 appearances for Argentina and played an important role in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in 2025. His arrival at Atletico gives Simeone an experienced centre-back who brings aggression, leadership and a strong mentality to the defensive unit.
Romero’s decision to join Atletico was also influenced by his previous experiences at the Metropolitano, particularly the atmosphere created by the supporters during Champions League matches. He now wants to establish himself as a key figure at the club and help write a new chapter in its history. With a contract until 2031 and a clear desire to remain in Madrid for many years, Romero appears ready to make a lasting impact at Atletico.
